5 Prayers for a Country in Need of Revival This Fourth of July

This July Fourth, as we get together with family and friends to celebrate America's birthday, it's a good time to think about our past, but also about where we are now and where we're headed. The United States, a nation built on ideas of freedom and fairness, is at a crossroads. We see people divided, worrying about our nation’s future, and wanting to see spiritual revival happen.
We want people to wake up spiritually, getting closer to God in ways that touch every part of our lives and our country. We need to line back up with the biblical values that keep us strong, and we need to protect the democracy that cost us so much to create. Founding Father and second U.S. President John Adams wrote: “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven, that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.”
As Christians, we believe that prayer is powerful. We believe God hears us when we call on him, and that God’s Holy Spirit can work in wonderful ways to bring positive change to our country. So, this July Fourth, let’s ask God to bring a spiritual revival to our country that touches every person living here! Here are five prayers for a country in need of revival this July Fourth.

Dear God, my nation – the United States – urgently needs your mercy. We’ve often walked away from you to chase our own desires and forgotten the basic truths this country was built on. We’ve trusted more in our own efforts than in your guidance and help. Sometimes, we’ve become so proud of all the wealth we have here in the United States that we take it for granted, and we no longer feel like we need to listen to your guidance. I confess that I’ve personally contributed to this spiritual decline through my own mistakes of not listening to you when I should have.
God, your Word reminds me in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “… if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” I pray for a strong spirit of humility to spread across our nation. Please show me our sins – sins of being selfish, mean, divisive, and more. Open my eyes, God, to see our country and myself from your perspective. Give me a fresh sense of hope and show me how our lives can improve when we trust you more. I pray for a spirit of true repentance, so we can turn away from our mistakes and turn toward you.
Help us to do more than just feel sorry, but to truly rely on your Holy Spirit to help us live holy lives. Please help us change our thoughts, which lead to our attitudes and actions, and shape the whole direction of our lives. Help us to tear down the walls of pride and self-reliance that we’ve built. Pour out your Spirit, so people across our nation will be moved to humble themselves before you, seek your face, and turn completely back to your righteous ways. Heal our land as only you can, working in the hearts and minds of everyone in America. Thank you, God. Amen.

Dear God, it’s so painful to see the divisions that are tearing our nation apart. Americans are so separated that we’re not even talking with each other civilly much anymore. Despite the name “United States,” we don’t have the unity in diversity that you want your people to enjoy. I confess that I, too, have sometimes made these divisions worse through my judgments, my impatience, or my unwillingness to listen to those who think differently from me. Your Son, Jesus, prayed for unity among believers in John 17:21: “that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
God, I pray for a miracle of unity in the United States. Break down the walls of hatred and misunderstanding that separate us. Give us the grace to see each other through your eyes, as valuable people who are all created in your image and deserving of love and respect. Inspire me to do what I can personally to work for unity and healing. Help me to admit my past mistakes and find ways to heal and restore broken relationships. Show me how to resolve current conflicts in my life by listening well, with a true desire to understand and learn from those who have different views from me. Instead of trying to control or shame people I don’t agree with, help me feel empathy for them and truly hear their points of view.
I pray for a fresh outpouring of your Holy Spirit that would connect all Americans and create real friendships among us. Let your love, which “binds everything together in perfect unity” (Colossians 3:14), become the glue that holds us together, so that the world can see your presence among us and believe in you. Thank you, God. Amen.

3. A prayer for trustworthy leaders.

Dear God, please help all of our nation’s leaders – the people who work for all branches and departments of our federal, state, and local government, at all levels. They have huge responsibilities, since the decisions they make affect millions of people in big ways. I confess that I have sometimes been quick to criticize our leaders, and slow to pray to pray for them. Your Word says in Proverbs 29:2: “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.”
Please raise up righteous leaders in every area of influence in the United States. Give them the wisdom that comes from you, not from clever human plans or political tricks. Give them the ability to tell right from wrong, to choose justice for everyone over their own interests, and to put the well-being of all citizens above party disagreements. I pray for leaders who will fear you, God, and seek your advice above all else. Inspire them to lead with honesty, openness, and a commitment to truth.
Protect them from corruption, from the temptations of power, and from the pressure to go against their beliefs. Give them the strength to bravely make the best decisions, even when those decisions are unpopular or hard to make. Help them to be humble and motivated by service, instead of arrogant and motivated by power. Give them compassion for all the Americans who they can help. Please guide them day by day, so our nation can enjoy well-being. Thank you, God. Amen.

Dear God, I’m very concerned about all the false information that is spreading throughout the United States, and how many people aren’t checking facts or using their God-given minds to think critically about information. John 8:32 says: “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” It’s essential for Americans to think clearly about what’s true and what’s not, and to practice discernment to separate wisdom from foolishness.
Any of us can be easily swayed by popular opinions or by voices that agree with our own ideas, if we’re not evaluating messages carefully. I pray for a mighty revival of truth in the United States. Expose every lie and every attempt to trick or mislead people. Give me and everyone in our nation the wise discernment we need to accurately judge what’s true from what’s false and what’s good from what’s evil.
Help me to think carefully about the information I get, to resist the urge to just believe stories without checking the facts with reliable sources (traditional media rather than social media or AI, etc.), and to stand up to evil attempts to lie to people. Please help the people who work in our media and in our schools to be committed to honesty and accuracy. Convict all Americans to love truth, to seek it, to speak it, and to live by it consistently.
Free us from lies and lead us into the wonderful freedom that comes from knowing and embracing your truth. Let your light shine into every dark corner of false information and expose the truth. Thank you, God. Amen.

Dear God, please start a nationwide spiritual awakening this July Fourth. It sometimes feels like there’s a spiritual laziness that has fallen over many people – even people who say they follow you. We all need to be refreshed spiritually. Your Word in Acts 3:19 calls us to: “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”
Please let a time of refreshment sweep across the United States. Spark a hunger for you in the hearts of people from all walks of life. Let them be hungry for holiness that leads to closer relationships with you. Help all Americans understand sin and their need for you. Let them feel your love for them in ways that inspire them to move closer to you.
Please revitalize U.S. churches. Make them all places of passionate prayer and worship, with successful outreaches to their communities. Help all believers in our country share your Gospel message in fresh ways, with love and courage. Let all Americans learn about the ultimate hope you offer them. Thank you, God. Amen.
In conclusion, as the fireworks light up the sky this July Fourth, let’s spread God’s light by praying for a revival in our nation. As we pray for revival and live in ways that show we’re ready for it, God will answer our prayers in powerful ways!
