5 Steps to Embrace Biblical Wellness in a Busy World

You live in a world that never stops moving. In this busy world, it’s easy to become stressed and exhausted. So, it’s vital to pursue wellness daily to enjoy the abundant life God wants you to enjoy. While physical wellness practices like eating well and exercising get much attention, spiritual wellness sometimes gets overlooked. But God has designed your soul and body to work together and has given you valuable wellness advice in the Bible. Embracing wellness from a biblical perspective helps you thrive, no matter how busy your life becomes. Here are five steps to embrace biblical wellness in a busy world:

1. Strengthen Your Spirit by Prioritizing Time with God

Spiritual wellness is the foundation for all other types of wellness. When your relationship with God is strong, you can experience peace and purpose in every other area of your life. So, don’t let your time with God slip to the bottom of your to-do list. Prioritized resting regularly from his demanding ministry work and praying to God the Father. 

Jesus reminds you in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” 

Prioritizing time with God involves centering your life around your relationship with him. Make appointments with God just like you would for meeting with anyone else, and do your best to protect those regular meeting times between you and God.

Build prayer and meditation habits you enjoy, so you’ll be inspired to keep communicating with God regularly. Over time, you’ll notice a deeper connection with God and experience greater peace as a result. Consistency is more important than duration. Even a few focused minutes of prayer and meditation can significantly boost your wellness. 

As you strengthen your spirit, you’ll find that you’re better able to manage stress and make wise decisions, no matter how hectic your life gets. The spiritual strength you receive when communicating with God will overflow into every situation you face in your busy schedule. 

Besides your regular meeting times with God, you can check in with God anytime and anywhere during each day. You can pray while doing chores, meditate on a Bible verse during your commute, or worship as you walk outside in nature. God wants to meet you in your scheduled appointments with him and in the flow of your everyday life. Inviting God in lets you discover that God will meet your needs and empower you in every situation.

Emotional wellness is connected to how well you protect your heart in this fallen world. 

Proverbs 4:23 encourages you to: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” 

Your emotional state influences your thoughts and actions, which affect your whole life's direction. In this sinful and stressful world, you must intentionally guard your heart. One powerful way to take good care of your emotional health is by being honest with yourself and God.

The Book of Psalms contains King David’s raw emotions – from anger and fear to hope and joy. He brought all of his feelings before God. Like David, you can pour your heart into prayer, knowing that God listens and cares. Emotional honesty is healing! Another key to emotional wellness is managing your thought life. 

Philippians 4:8 advises you: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” 

When you focus on God’s truth rather than your fears or failures, you train your mind to respond with faith instead of anxiety. It’s also important to set healthy boundaries to prevent suffering from burnout.

Saying “no” is wise whenever you need to do so to protect your well-being. You don’t have to attend every event, fix every problem, or respond to every message instantly. Safeguarding your peace may also involve limiting your exposure to negative influences. Surround yourself with caring and trustworthy people who encourage you in your walk with Jesus

Share your struggles with trusted friends, mentors, or a counselor. Don’t suppress your feelings; process them with God’s help and wisdom. You can enjoy more emotional wellness by fighting off a cynical attitude daily and practicing instead. Reflecting on what you’re thankful for – even during hard times – can change your perspective in ways that help you embrace the hope God offers you. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, the Bible encourages you to: “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

3. Honor God by Taking Good Care of the Body He Gave You

The Bible speaks of your body as a temple of the Holy Spirit. It says in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” Taking good care of your physical health is a spiritual responsibility

Caring for your body includes getting enough sleep, eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, and staying hydrated. These wellness habits might sound simple, but in a busy world, they often get neglected. Each decision to take good care of your body adds up, giving you more energy to serve God and others. So, build specific habits into your life that will benefit your body. Drink more water each day. Take short walks outside to refresh your mind and body. Choose to eat whole foods over processed snacks. Go to bed earlier and make whatever other changes will help you get the sleep your body needs to function well.

As you make healthier choices, you’ll find more strength and resilience in your daily life, no matter how busy you are. Taking good care of the body God gave you is a way to worship God. When you make each healthy choice, do so with gratitude and praise. 

Colossians 3:17 advises: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” 

Taking good care of your body can also be a way to rely more on God. When you recognize your physical limits and need to care for your body, you’re reminded that your strength comes from God. Treating your body well shows God that you trust his design for you and your life.

4. Love Others Well by Building Loving Relationships

Since God designed you to live in community, building loving relationships to enjoy wellness is vital. 

Jesus says in John 13:34-35: “‘A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. Everyone will know you are my disciples if you love one another.” 

Relationships can be either a source of strength or stress, depending on how you invest in them. So, do your best to put love into action with the people in your life day by day. Make time to connect with your friends and family regularly, no matter how busy you are. The quality of your relationships often depends on your willingness to be present and engaged. Forgiveness is another important part of building loving relationships. Don’t hold grudges, because holding onto bitterness poisons your heart. 

Ephesians 4:31-32 tells you to: “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” 

Forgiveness frees you to love fully and move forward in peace. It’s also essential to build new relationships in the community with other people. Join a small group or Bible study, or volunteer in your church community, where you can grow with others and enjoy unity as God’s children

Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages you to: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” 

Being part of a faith community helps you stay grounded and supported. Choose to love the people God has placed in your life. When you do so, you’ll enjoy lots of love in return, leading to wellness in your life.

5. Take Breaks to Notice the Wonder of God’s Work Around You

In this busy world, rest often gets overlooked. But rest is essential to discover and enjoy the wonder of God’s work around you each day

Psalm 46:10, God says: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 

Taking regular breaks to be still allows you to reflect, so you can discover how God is moving in your life. When you slow down, you make space in your busy schedule to appreciate small but significant gifts from God, like a blooming flower or a child’s laughter. Rest allows you to discover more of God's wonderful work in your life. 

When you notice signs that you need rest, take a break to rest, which will renew your perspective and revive your energy. Let yourself breathe deeply, sit in nature, reflect on a Bible verse, or do something else that helps you pay closer attention to God’s wonder around you. 

Isaiah 40:31 reminds you: “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” 

When you take a break to look for glimpses of God’s work around you, you can become more aware of God’s constant presence, strengthening your wellness as you’re inspired!

Biblical wellness helps you thrive in every way – spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Taking good care of the soul and body God has given you can lead you to enjoy many blessings, no matter how busy you are!
