As search and rescue efforts continue in Nepal, about 500 Americans remain unaccounted for after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck last Saturday (April 25).

ABC News reports the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu has received over 1,000 inquiries about the whereabouts of missing family members. The Embassy says that about 500 Americans have been located, leaving 500 potentially missing; however, the missing list could continue duplicate names.

Ambassador Peter W. Bodde told ABC, “We get information, or families show concern that someone might be missing. We immediately start putting them into our database and look at what information we have.”

The Embassy is particularly worried about Americans that could be trapped in higher elevation.

About 3,000 to 4,000 Americans were believed to be visiting Nepal at the time of the earthquake, as it is the height of tourism season.

Meanwhile, the earthquake death count has surpassed 5,500. To contribute to disaster relief efforts, follow this link.
