Chip and Joanna Gaines Facing Criticism after Media Misrepresents Them over Political Donation

Chip and Joanna Gaines are facing criticism after the Waco, Texas couple contributed to Chip’s sister school board campaign.
The couple donated $1,000 to Chip’s sister, Shannon Braun, who is campaigning for a spot on the board of the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District in Texas, Faithwire Reports.
As part of her campaign, Braun has said she opposes including critical race theory and said she would “vote down anything and everything that further promotes critical race theory in our school district and actively work to remove all critical race theory.”
Critical race theory is defined as the view that the law and legal institutions are inherently racist, and that race is a socially constructed concept.
In response to the news of the donation, some media outlets and others pointed to Chip and Joanna for being against critical race theory.

“Stop giving them [your] money challenge,” tweeted Dallas Observer reporter Paige Skinner.

“Shocking the gentrifyers (sic) are against even knowing about actual American history,” wrote one respondent.
Another said, “Not going to watch them anymore. Returning products from their Target line as well. Too much hate in this country. I’ll vote with my wallet.”
“I am so disappointed to hear this,” added someone else. “I love their program. But I’ll have to boycott it [and] encourage everyone I know to boycott it as well. Sorry Chip [and] JoAnne (sic), I can’t support anyone who’s against factual American history. We white people have been persecuting [people of color] for way too long.”
Others, however, congratulated the couple for “fighting against racism,” but many took issue with how The Hill presented the story.
“He gave a grand to his sister, who is running for school board. Though I can see why those who work at The Hill would be wildly confused about not hating your family,” a Twitter user wrote.
Another person asserted, “Incorrect and misleading headline here, The Hill. Fix it, please.”
Braun’s campaign page no longer includes an endorsements section.
