A Christian student at a South Africa university has been removed from her position as Student Representative Council (SRC) president after expressing her opposition to gay marriage on a personal Facebook page.

Charisma News reports Zizipho Pae was responding to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on same-sex marriage when she wrote on Facebook, "We are institutionalizing and normalizing sin! Sin. May God have mercy on us."

After writing the post, the University of Cape Town’s SRC decided that the matter would have to be investigated. Ultimately, Pae was removed from her position, as the SRC said it supported the “rights of minorities and specifically the gay community.”

Pae also endured threats and harassment from LGBT advocates. The student’s shared office was vandalized with signs that read “get out of here” and scripture verses were town down from the walls.

Pae told the Family Policy Institute that she believes the treatment was unfair.

"Being an SRC member in my view does not mean that you need to abandon your Christian convictions and your faith,” she said.

"Christ in my life comes before all political positions or political thoughts, so I definitely won't be retracting what I said."

The University of Cape Town responded to the incident saying that it support freedom of religion as well as LGBT rights.
