England: Nurse Sues after Being Fired for Talking about Her Faith

An English nurse who worked in her field for 15 years was recently dismissed after being accused of sharing her faith with some of her patients. reports that Sarah Kuteh has a long history of exemplary nursing, but that didn’t stop her from being fired by Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford, U.K., after some patients accused her of discussing her religion with them.

Kuteh, however, maintains that she only discussed her faith when she had to go through a questionnaire with patients which included a question on their religious affiliation.

“I explained to [my supervisor] that this only comes about when I have to go through the questionnaire with the patient, because on the questionnaire there’s an area where the patient has to state their religion and that could prompt a conversation,” she said.

Kuteh is filing a lawsuit, stating that she was dismissed unfairly.

“It was embarrassing for me and painful after all I had done in my years as a nurse,” Kuteh said. “I was told I couldn’t even speak to my colleagues. All I had done was to nurse from my heart. How could it be harmful to tell someone about Jesus?”

The U.K.’s new Prime Minister, Theresa May, just last month said that residents should be free to speak about their faith in their places of work. May even endorsed a report on this issue from the Lawyer’s Christian Fellowship.
