Hamas officials reportedly stopped the Palestinian Islamic Jihad from shooting rockets toward Israel after three members of the Islamic Jihad were killed in a West Bank firefight with Israel over the weekend.

The Kan public broadcaster said Palestinian officials had been told that Hamas did not want more fighting to continue with Israel in Gaza, the Times of Israel reports.

Tensions have been escalating between Israel and Hamas, and according to reports, Hamas has said it will not support the Palestinian Jihad if it chooses to go to war with Israel again.

The three Islamic Jihad members were killed Saturday as they were en route to reportedly carry out an attack in Israel. A fourth member of the terrorist cell group was later arrested.

Authorities said the three men who were killed had been “ticking bombs” ready to execute an attack.

“We are in the midst of a joint effort, by all security forces, to stop the string of recent terrorist attacks and to bring back security to the citizens of Israel,” said Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

The raid on the terrorist cell came after a wave of deadly attacks in Israel that left 11 people dead in just a few days. Officials were also on high alert as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan began.

Security has been increased in the West Bank, Gaza border and other major cities.

“We are in a difficult period of terror attacks against Israel citizens, a situation that we cannot accept,” said Israeli defense minister Benny Gantz. “We are considering the measures we can take in honor of Ramadan in order to allow you to celebrate the holiday in the best way possible, while we at the same time maintain security.”

In May 2021, also around the time of Ramadan, Hamas launched rockets into Israel that started an 11-day war with Gaza that led to death and rioting.
