Hundreds of Christians will meet together Wednesday evening in England’s Parliament Square to pray for the nation as debate rages over whether to remain in the European Union (EU).

According to, the prayer gathering welcomes people of all faiths and denominations and seeks to foster unity in England over the decision to leave or remain in the EU.

Rev. Patrick Allerton, associate vicar of St. Dionis in Fulham, said those gathered will pray for the “healing of our land and healing in political terms.”

The event will be held from 7-8 p.m. Allerton added that the gathering is “totally without agenda or political line.”

Instead, said Allerton, "It is a visible statement to the watching world that the church is alive and engaged. It is about being a city on a hill and a lamp on its stand."

Allerton went on to say that Christians are called to be engaged in politics and to work for God’s will to be done on earth.

The Church of England has remained officially neutral on whether or not England should leave the EU, although a number of Church of England leaders have expressed support for remaining.

Polls found that the majority of Christian laypeople, however, support leaving the EU. Many take this view based on economic factors.

England will vote on whether to leave the EU or remain a part of it on Thursday. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m.
