The Islamic State has carried out two suicide bombing attacks in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad which killed 70 people and injured at least 100 others.

The suicide fighters drove motorcycles into a crowded mobile phone market, targeting Shiite Muslims, The Christian Post reports.

At least 17 members of government and paramilitary security were also injured in a separate gunfight with Islamic State militants in Baghdad’s suburb of Abu Ghraib.

The Islamic State has vowed to continue the bloodshed.

"Our swords will not cease to cut off the heads of the rejectionist polytheists, wherever they are," said a statement from the Islamic State.

The Associated Press noted that the attack was the deadliest of its kind this year. The Islamic State has reportedly caused the deaths of over 18,800 people since 2014.

"The violence suffered by civilians in Iraq remains staggering. The so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' continues to commit systematic and widespread violence and abuses of international human rights law and humanitarian law. These acts may, in some instances, amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity, and possibly genocide," said a report from the U.N. Assistance Mission for Iraq and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In addition to the staggering death toll, statistics show that 36,245 Iraqis were injured during this same time period, while more than 3.2 million have been displaced from their homes.
