Israeli Troops Leave Gaza with Three-Day Ceasefire in Effect

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops have left Gaza as a three-day ceasefire takes effect. Both sides agreed to halt violence completely, though Israel warned that it would be ready to strike if Hamas militants violated the agreement.

“The IDF is maintaining defensive positions around the Gaza Strip and will respond to attacks if they raise,” Israeli officials said.

While the ceasefire is in effect, Hamas and IDF leaders will travel to Cairo to engage in “indirect talks” reports ABC News

Previous to the agreed ceasefire, Israeli officials celebrated the destruction of tunnels that led from Gaza to Israel; Hamas fired a string of missiles into Israel.

The nearly month-long conflict has brought a heavy death toll: 1,900 Palestinians and 67 Israelis have lost lives since the fighting began. The loss of Palestinian civilian lives has sparked harsh criticism from world leaders.
