New York’s Attorney General Working to Overturn Late-Term Abortion Ban

New York’s attorney general is pushing for legislation which would make late-term abortions legal. reports that Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman is advocating for exceptions to a 1970 New York law which prohibits abortions after 24 weeks gestation, when an unborn baby is viable outside the womb.

Schneiderman believes the 1970 law is incompatible with newer abortion decisions handed down by the Supreme Court.

Although Schneiderman claims that reducing the restrictions on late-term abortions would protect women’s health, pro-life advocates say these “health” exceptions are so broadly defined that they essentially allow abortion on demand.

“The use of ‘life and health’ of the mother really means abortion on demand throughout all nine months of pregnancy,” Dennis Poust, a spokesman for the New York State Catholic Conference, said in reaction in Schneiderman’s proposal.

Lori Kehoe told LifeNews that, in most cases, if a mother needs to end her pregnancy in the third trimester, a C-section will allow both mother and baby to survive.

“If a mother needs to end her pregnancy in the third trimester, it can be safely ended with a C-section. A C-section takes minutes and results in a newborn baby. No one has to die. A third trimester abortion takes days endangering a mother’s life and results in a dead baby,” Kehoe said.

New York already has an extremely high abortion rate. In 2012, 101,674 babies were aborted. The abortion rate is even higher in New York City where about 40 percent of babies are aborted. This rate rises to 60 percent for African American babies.
