This week, Russia’s foreign minister warned that a nuclear conflict “should not be underestimated,” adding that the violence could spiral into World War III.

According to Court House News, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia has “a feeling that the West wants Ukraine to continue to fight and, as it seems to them, wear out, exhaust the Russian army and the Russian military-industrial war complex. This is an illusion.”

“The danger is serious,” he added. “It is real. It should not be underestimated.”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Twitter that the comments from Lavrov come as Russia’s efforts have begun to fail.

“Russia loses last hope to scare the world off supporting Ukraine,” Kuleba tweeted. “Thus the talk of a ‘real’ danger of WWIII. This only means Moscow senses defeat in Ukraine.”

Russia initially invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 to try to seize Kyiv, the capital, but Russian President Vladimir Putin’s soldiers have been forced to retreat.

Phillips P. O’Brien, professor of strategic studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, said, “the two sides are sort of every day weakening each other.”

This week, Western allies met in Germany to pledge more support to Ukraine. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his country would be sending anti-aircraft systems to Kyiv, Fox News reports.

The European Union is also considering a partial block of Russian oil and natural gas.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this week that he promised more weapons to Ukraine.

“We want to see Russia weakened to the degree that it can’t do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine,” Austin said.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently met with Putin to ask him to end the war and help civilians trapped in the war zone.

Russian forces are targeting Donbas in the eastern region of Ukraine. According to reports, the battle over Donbas could be a decisive phase of the ongoing war.
