Senate Democrats Try to Block Confirmation of Trump’s EPA Pick

Senate Democrats are pushing back against Trump’s nomination of Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

According to Politico.com, Democratic Senators are working to turn the Senate’s vote to confirm Pruitt into a referendum on whether Republican believe humans are a factor in climate change.

Pruitt has been called a “climate change denier,” and his stance on global warming has many Democrats worried.

The Democratic senators hope to turn enough Republican voters away from favoring Pruitt, possibly capitalizing on the disagreement that already exists between President-elect Donald Trump and some Republicans.

Perhaps the Democratic senators are also aware of a recent study that revealed that, while the majority of U.S. evangelicals don’t believe in Evolution, a majority also believe that climate change is occurring. The study also found that a majority of Americans in general believe climate change is a real threat.

This could perhaps be another wedge to drive between Pruitt and Trump--who has also expressed doubts about climate change--and the majority of other conservatives who tend to believe that it is an issue.

“We are totally mobilized for this one and ready to roll,” stated Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), although the effort to sabotage Pruitt’s confirmation is unlikely to be successful.

“We cannot roll back the progress we made in the past eight years to protect the environment,” added Delaware Sen. Tom Carper. “Anyone leading EPA who wants to ignore science or look out for special interests at the expense of public health can expect a fight with me.”
