The film The Case for Christ has risen to the number nine spot at the box office over the weekend. The film was previously at number 10.

According to, the film grossed $2,720,000 last weekend, bringing it to a total of close to $8,500,000.

But not only is the film making money, it is the first film from Pure Flix studios to receive more positive than negative ratings from the critics.

Although the studio’s previous films, such as God’s Not Dead and its sequel, were popular with Christians audiences, they didn’t receive favorable reviews from critics.

The Case for Christ, however, has received a 70 percent “fresh” rating on the movie review website Rotten Tomatoes. To be “fresh,” rather than “rotten,” a movie has to receive at least 60 percent positive reviews.

According to Relevant Magazine, critic Joe Leydon at Variety called the movie “intriguing” while Jackie Cooper of the Huffington Post said it was “well made and well acted.”

The film tells the compelling true story of atheist journalist Lee Strobel who sets out to prove that Christianity isn’t true, but finds that such a task is more than he bargained for.

Strobel ultimately must grapple with the evidence for the historical Jesus, as well as a Jesus who is alive and well today. The film also follows the conflict that emerges in Strobel’s marriage when his wife, Leslie, becomes a Christian.
