Trump on Obamacare Repeal: ‘Maybe It’ll Take Till Sometime into Next Year’

President Donald Trump said in an interview Sunday that Obamacare may not be repealed and replaced until 2018.

He told Fox News host Bill O’Reilly that it is a “complicated” process.

“Maybe it’ll take ‘till sometime into next year, but we’re certainly going to be in the process,” Trump said.

“It statutorily takes awhile to get,” he added. “We’re going to be putting it in fairly soon, I think that, yes, I would like to say by the end of the year at least the rudiments but we should have something within the year and the following year.”

The announcement that a change may not come until 2018 is a major shift from his promises in January when he said that he would offer a replacement to Obamacare as soon as his health and human services secretary, Rep. Tom Grice, was confirmed by the Senate.

“We’re going to be submitting, as soon as our secretary is approved, almost simultaneously, shortly thereafter, a plan,” he said during a press conference last month.

Since his inauguration, only one of his executive orders has affected Obamacare. His first executive order said it would take the steps “to minimize the unwarranted economic and regulatory burdens of the Act, and prepare to afford the States more flexibility and control to create a more free and open healthcare market.”
