Washington state will soon allow residents who do not wish to identify as male or female to identify simply as “X”.

According to CNN.com, the new provision only applies to birth certificates already in existence which can be changed and does not apply to new birth certificates.

The new provision defines the third gender option “X” as the following:

“A gender that is not exclusively male or female, including, but not limited to, intersex, agender, amalgagender, androgynous, bigender, demigender, female-to-male, genderfluid, genderqueer, male-to-female, neutrois, nonbinary, pangender, third sex, transgender, transsexual, Two Spirit, and unspecified.”

Minors who wish to change the sex on their birth certificate must still receive a written letter of consent from a parent or guardian, as well as documentation of approval from a licensed healthcare professional.

As ChristianHeadlines.com previously reported, Washington D.C. also recently made allowances for a third gender option on identification documents, including driver’s licenses.

Oregon and California will reportedly adopt similar policies soon.

This change will meet the needs of a growing number of millennials who reportedly identify as members of the LGBTQ community, according to CNN.com.
