Shame Busters [Part 2]
Are you ready for some good news?
Whatever you’ve decided you have to have in order to feel valuable and meaningful – the love of Jesus is far superior to all of that.
Today’s text: “But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.”” (Ruth 1:16–17, ESV)
The Lord spoke a fascinating word through the prophet Jeremiah: “Every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols”(Jeremiah 10:14).
The goldsmith fashions a golden calf an image of his god. He puts it on the shelf, and then he bows down to worship it. He offers sacrifices to the golden calf. When the golden calf doesn't do anything for him it doesn’t bless him, it doesn’t give him life or prosperity he makes more sacrifices. Still, the golden calf doesn’t do anything for him. He feels he has to do more and more. When still nothing happens, he feels ashamed. The idol that he put on the shelf has turned around to shame him.
In the book of Ruth, Naomi created an idol that shamed her. “I have to have sons in order to be valuable,” she said to herself. Her grief was overwhelming enough but, added to her sadness, was her shame.
We, too, create idols that shame us. “I have to have others’ approval in order to feel good about myself.”
“I have to have a lot of money in my bank account if I’m going to be important.”
We bow down to them; we make sacrifices to them. When they don’t give us peace and satisfaction, we are put to shame.
But you are not trapped! Your value is determined by your Creator. You might be bitter; you might be going through a hard time, but God is in your life. He knows you and He loves you. He clings to you. In Him, you have an eternal destiny.
And that is the Gospel!
