The Lamb is On the Throne [Part 3]

Are you ready for some good news?

The supreme Ruler over all – the all-powerful monarch of the cosmos – is a lamb.

Today’s Text: “And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?”” (Revelation 5:2, ESV)

When John had a vision of the Heavenly throne room, he was, at first, despaired to see that no one could open up a scroll that scholars say resembles an ancient will and testament:

and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”” (Revelation 5:4–5, ESV)

When the Lion, symbolic of might and power, approaches, an elder rejoices at the appearing of this great figure from the tribe of Judah. But when He appears, He doesn’t look like a lion, He looks like a little lamb that has been slain.

I once heard someone quip that Darwin’s theory of the survival of the fittest can’t be true because sheep still roam the earth! The lion is the king of the jungle, but the lamb is the picture of weakness.  The lamb is the least likely one to be able to open the scroll, but He is the only one who can.

What John sees, symbolically, is that the sacrifice of Jesus Christ won Him the right to open up the treasures of the empire as an inheritance unto all God’s children.  Mercy won the day. Shed blood triumphed. Mercy reigns. Grace rules the cosmos.

When you wonder if your sin disqualifies you from the inheritance of God, fix your eyes on the heavenly throne and think much of the finished work of the Lamb on your behalf. He has opened up the scroll of God’s promises not with the brute force of a lion but with the love of a vulnerable lamb. And that’s the gospel!
