Tempers exploded again over the most contested holy ground in the world. The remodeling project was routine. The old carpet in the Dome of the Rock was frayed and needed to be replaced. Jordan’s King Abdullah II financed the project. The Jordanian workman pulled up the old carpet, put glue on the new, and secured it. Simple? NO. Nothing is straightforward on this mountain top where Moslems believe Muhammad made a midnight ride to heaven, and Jews believe Abraham almost offered Isaac and later Solomon built the Temple. The renovations exposed geometric designs on the floor and Israeli archaeologists cried that the glue used to secure the new carpet would damage these ancient artifacts. The Jordanian workmen rebutted, “We can remove the stuff with our fingers. No damage!” I pray that in the midst of all the fighting some would remember that when Jesus died, the veil of the Temple was torn from top to bottom and all could look inside.
“And behold, the Temple’s curtain was torn from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks split. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to man.” - Matthew 27:51-53
When the curtain tore and opened access to the holy ground, it revealed that the place was empty. When the Babylonians surrounded Jerusalem, Ezekiel described how God’s Shekinah (His glory) departed from the Temple and from the city. When Jesus came He became the Temple where God took up residence on earth. Now He sends His Spirit to take up residence in our lives when we trust Him; therefore we become the holy place and there is no need to fight over who supposedly controls some holy ground.
It’s not the secrets to be discovered under some carpet that are important. It’s the truth that needs to be shouted from the housetops. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He has opened wide the door to His Father’s presence.
LORD, I pray for the peace of Jerusalem, for the Day when Your Son will be trusted and adored by Jew and Gentile, and He will reign over a new earth. Thank you for filling my life with Your presence and because of this gift, my life will never be empty. I pray that you will turn on the lights in the hearts of many Israelis and Palestinians so that they can stop fighting over holy ground.
