Get Up And Make Your Bed
This past Thanksgiving Mary and I did get a flu shot. I thought we were safe for the year until a couple of weeks ago after standing all day on Thursday teaching at Southern Bible, I found myself flat on my back in bed on Friday. I stayed there for the next few days, and two weeks later I’ve still got a lion growl cough. Generously, I passed it on to Mary. She’s spent the last week on her back.
It seems that a clever virus that produces flu-like symptoms has invaded the Dallas area and it was not one of the villains covered by our flu shot. Mary and I have spent only a few days on our backs. Imagine being paralyzed and having to spend eight years too weak to get out of bed.
“As Peter was traveling through all the area, he also came down to the saints living in Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas who for eight years lay on his bed. He was paralyzed. Peter said to him, ‘Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed.’ And immediately he got up. All those living in Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.” Acts 9:32-35
Just as Jesus healed the paralyzed man when his friends cut a hole in the roof and dropped him before Jesus in the middle of a Bible study (Luke 5:17-26), the resurrected, ascended Jesus had the power to heal this paralyzed man through his Apostle Peter.
LORD, thanks that the healing of Aeneas by Peter gave us a glimpse into the healing and strength you are going to give to all who trust in you. Thanks that there will be no sickbeds in the new Heaven and Earth.
