Pay Attention

Mark 4:21-25

Johnny, the TA for my Old Testament Survey class, makes himself available, not only on Tuesday evening before our scheduled class, but also on Saturday morning. He’s taken all my classes, made high grades in them all, and he’s gifted in helping students internalize the material as we work as a team. What’s crazy is that our best students who take advantage of the extra opportunities to learn, and some of the students who aren’t getting what we’re trying to teach about tracking God’s redemptive story fail to show up for Johnny’s sessions. Their test grades reveal that they lose what they initially had.

Jesus, the Master Teacher, knew the importance of listening for the student. That’s why he told those closest to him to pay attention.

“Jesus went on and said to them, ‘Is a lamp brought in and then placed under a basket or under the bed, and not placed on a lampstand? For nothing is hidden except that it might be revealed, nor is anything hidden except that it come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.’ And he said to them, ‘Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use it, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you. For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who doesn’t’ have, even what he has will be taken away.’”  Mark 4:21-25

Those who have a shallow attention span lose even the little bit of light they received at the beginning. They lose the opportunity for others to see the power of the light they could have received.

LORD, help me to be a good listener and to realize that everyone will be able to see whether or not I’m responding to your light. Help us as your children not to hide the light by not being out connecting with those who need the chance to see the power of Jesus to change our lives.
