Only Possible with God

Mark 10:23-27

Everyone was on their feet after our first long session. We had divided the Kenyans into five groups to answer questions on courtship, weddings, roles of the husband and wife, the definition a good marriage, and challenges facing Kenyan marriages and how they thought these challenges should be met.

I had chosen leaders from each group to report their answers to their group’s assignment, and then we turned to Genesis 15 to learn about what the term “covenant” meant to God. Then we turned to Proverbs 2 and Malachi 2 to see how the Old Testament presents a sacred promise as the core of our marriages.

As you can see, we needed a good strenuous break after all this interaction. When the praise started, a sixty-eight-year-old man cut off some palm branches and started leading the procession—dancing, jumping, and praising the Lord. When he came close to me, he handed me a branch and invited me to join the line of praise.

By the time more than one hundred of us had danced, jumped, and sung our way all around the auditorium, I was begging the Lord to give me the strength and oxygen of the praise leader. At the close of the next teaching hour, I met my new friend outside on the path on the side of the church. “Dr. Dave, thank you! Your teaching from the Word touched my heart.” Then he said, “For many years I was a Moslem, but then I met Jesus.”

What are the chances that a Texas professor would find himself dancing with joy in Jesus’s gracious love with a former Kenyan Moslem? It’s impossible, but---

“Looking around after the rich man had left, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘How tough it is for those having wealth to enter God’s Kingdom.’ His disciples were astonished at these words, but Jesus went on, ‘Children, how difficult is it to enter into God’s Kingdom? It’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter God’s Kingdom.’ This made the disciples even more amazed, and they said to each other, ‘Who then can be saved?’ Jesus answered, ‘With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.’” Mark 10:23-27

Whether it’s my salvation as a child of five when I responded to my dad’s presentation of the Gospel at Word of Life Ranch or my new Kenyan friend who trusted Jesus after many years of trying to fulfill the Five Pillars of Islam, all of us who have believed have received a gift—a miracle that took place in our hearts that only God can do.
