If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. – Mother Teresa
Dying might seem like a dumb way to get out from under the law. If you are going to drive with illegal paraphernalia, under the influence, past a cop, and through a school zone – and if you want to avoid all consequences of such actions – you might want to try ending your reckless escapade by dying. It should get you off. Once.
Spiritually, however, death is the only way to escape the application of the rules. And it works not just once, but all the time. Follow Paul’s reasoning here:
Do you not know, brothers and sisters… that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. … So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. … But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. (Romans 7:1-2, 4, 6)
Read that again. This is profound, powerful stuff. If you are in Christ, you were crucified with Him, and in the process, you died to the law. Just like a widower is free to love again, we are totally free to love Jesus and follow Him in freedom, apart from the religious legalism and personal performance standards we heap upon our shoulders.
It’s time to be free from that today, because in Christ, you died to the law a long time ago.
Oh Lord, I’ve united myself to substandard deities. The “shoulds” and “must haves” of life have kept me under lock and key. I’ve been enslaved by my appetite for approval. When presented with the choice of being betrothed to rules or being betrothed to the One who came to set me free, I see no choice. I choose You! Let’s dance this dance that tells the world we belong to each other. Amen.
