If egos went missing
Imagine a day when our egos run away. They don’t get what they want, so they take their ball and go home. They refuse to participate and vow never to return. Imagine a day when they decide to punish everyone by pulling out. What would a day without egos be like? Well, meetings would be shorter. Productivity would increase. The future would unfold seamlessly. And everyone would sleep better.
God instructs us to send our egos packing and follow Christ’s example. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3,4).
To get beyond ourselves, the Bible points us to Jesus and urges us to have an attitude that is “the same as that of Christ Jesus” (verse 5).By nature, we aspire to be minor deities and claw our way up the pedestal. We sweet-talk others to convince them they would be better off with us on top. Forgive us, Lord, for outsized egos.
If anyone could flaunt his status, it is Jesus. He is God, but he didn’t play that card. He took on the nature of a servant and was humble through and through. He disregarded his own well-being and went to the cross for the benefit of others. In last-shall-be-first fulfillment, “God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name” (verse 9).
