Stay in sync
Years ago I participated in a sound effects show at Disney World. While watching a black-and-white movie, we used props to re-create sounds: thunder, doors creaking, glass breaking. I was horrible at it. The movie, which was supposed to be a Disney “horror” movie, quickly became a comedy. The sound of knocking came after the door was open. You heard the glass break three seconds after it hit the floor. The click of footsteps kept going after the man stopped walking.
It’s easy to get out of sync in life too, reacting at the wrong time and the wrong way to what’s going on around us. That’s why the apostle Paul reminds us,“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25).
Your temper doesn’t sync up with the call to live in peace. Avoiding conflict because it’s easier, even when you really need to lovingly confront someone, isn’t actually love. More stuff doesn’t lead to contentment. And inner peace won’t come when you drink because you’re miserable, eat when you’re lonely, and flirt on social media because you don’t feel beautiful.
Want to get back in sync? The Holy Spirit is ready and can’t wait to show his work through your life: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22,23).
