The real gospel
Pastor Mark Jeske

It isn’t very hard to work out a “spiritual” philosophy of life based roughly on how the business world works. People have invented variations on the same gig for many centuries. Start with a vague fear of the “Great Power” up there. Try to appease him/her/it with good deeds, prayers, and rituals. Take comfort in every little good thing you think you’ve done. Make yourself feel better by comparing yourself to people “worse” than you.

Alas, self-made religions only leave you hollow. Real peace comes only from the real gospel, which is based not on your performance but on Christ’s. The real gospel is based on the absolutely outrageous concept that God forgives rotten and worthless sinners in advance: “Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness” (Romans 4:4,5).

Astonishing! In the Christian faith you don’t get what you paid for. You get what Christ paid for. He trusts you enough to front you his mercy, trusting that you will believe and appreciate his loving rescue, absorb the life philosophy of the Bible, accept a godly value system, and treat others as he has treated you.

Other religions’ gods justify nice people. Only the Christians’ God justifies the wicked.
