The world we long for
Jason Nelson

I’m writing this devotion after innocence was shattered one more time. Children were killed at school. It seems disrespectful to call them children because they stared death in the face. No one remains a child who stares death in the face. I was inspired by the maturity of young survivors and dismayed at the ineptness of older people responsible for their safety. I long for a better world for children.

Isaiah also longed for a better world. Read Isaiah chapter 11 and ask yourself if he is describing the world you long for. In the midst of a society torn apart and taken captive, he looked ahead to the coming of the Messiah. The Messiah is at the center of the world we long for. It’s a place where “the wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them” (Isaiah 11:6). But must we wait for the Messiah’s return to have a better world? Can’t we improve the one we have?

Long before the Messiah became a victim of violence himself, he called for the end of violence. What a childish approach to life. It is the kind of childishness that should dwell in our hearts forever. Jesus can change people. “They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD” (Isaiah 11:9).
