The message that saves is the message concerning Jesus Christ
Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).
There is only one message that saves and that is the message concerning Jesus Christ.
Paul was very clear on this. He didn’t use fancy words or persuasive tactics in his communication.
He simply preached the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Add to this message or take away from it and you have emptied it of its power.
That’s what the Corinthians did.
And it caused all kinds of confusion and division within the church.
Sadly, the same is happening in the church today. Whether it’s water baptism, tithing, good works, or confessing to keep forgiven, the message is more often than not full of additions to the pure Gospel–the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Gospel message is enough. It is God’s design, fulfilled by Jesus. There is nothing you can add to it that will make it more powerful or valuable.
Think about it. Is there anything you could add to his death that would make you more forgiven? Is there anything you could add to his resurrection that would make you more alive in him?
So let me encourage you today to stand firm in the message concerning Jesus. And don’t let anyone tell you that Jesus is not enough.
Don’t let yourself become confused by the myriad of messages in the Christian world. The Word of God is very clear–adding anything to the Gospel of Jesus Christ makes it no gospel at all. Keep your eyes on Jesus and know that He is enough. In fact, He is everything.
