A Scholarly Skeptic
There is salvation in no one else! There is no other name in all of heaven for people to call on to save them (Acts 4:12).
It has been my privilege to visit hundreds of campuses, representing every continent, where I have talked to hundreds of thousands of college men and women about the Lord Jesus. On most campuses, there are professors and students alike who were militantly antagonistic toward Christ.
One famous skeptic was Dr. Cyril E. M. Joad, one of the world's greatest philosophers, who was for years head of the Philosophy Department at the University of London.
Dr. Joad and his friends and colleagues, Julian Huxley, Bertrand Russell, H. G. Wells and Bernard Shaw, have probably done more to undermine the faith of the collegiate world of the last generation than has any other one group. Dr. Joad believed that God was an impersonal part of the cosmos and that there is no such thing as sin.
It was in 1948 that I was reading the front page of the magazine section of the Los Angeles Times and my heart leaped with excitement. I read that Dr. Joad had received Christ! His reason was that two world wars and the imminence of a third world war had demonstrated conclusively to this old scholar that man was indeed sinful. Before his death, Dr. Joad, the former enemy of Christ, became convinced that the only explanation for sin was found in the Word of God, and the only solution for sin was found in the cross of Jesus Christ. He became a zealous follower of the Lord Jesus.
What changed the mind of this world-renowned scholar? Certainly he had studied the lives of every great teacher who ever walked this earth. But Jesus Christ was no ordinary man! He offered something for Dr. Joad that no other man could -- God's love and forgiveness, pardon for his sin -- past, present and future -- and assurance of eternal life.
Dr. Joad finally understood that "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles" (1 Corinthians 15:3-7, NIV).
No other religion or theological system offers an explanation and solution to man's sin problem -- only the Bible and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Some other religions offer nice sounding words, platitudes, high ideals, but there is only one cross. There is only one Savior.
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12, NIV).
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
