The Greatest List Of Honorees
For more than 50 years, I have been invited to speak to leaders in the Pentagon on numerous occasions. I am convinced that there is no segment of our society where men are so highly trained, dedicated, and patriotic as among the officers of our military.
Many of our senior officers have master's degrees and a number have PhDs. On average, they are a very superior group of people. Most important, I find more dedication to our Lord Jesus Christ in the Pentagon than in any other segment of our society. West Point, Annapolis, the Air Force Academy, and other military training institutions emphasize basic moral and spiritual disciplines. In general, the products of these institutions, every military person stands out as a person of integrity and principle. There are, of course, many exceptions.
On one occasion, I was walking down the corridor in the Pentagon, I came to a large display where there was a list of the names of the most honored military men in the history of our country, going back to the Revolutionary War.
Only a few were listed compared with the tens of millions of men who have served in uniform for our country. They were the Congressional Medal of Honor winners -- the highest and most distinguished award for valor anyone can receive. On that list I saw a dear, beloved friend, the late Joe Foss, one of America's most famous flying aces, a World War II hero.
Those Congressional Medal of Honor winners who are still living are held in such high esteem that when they enter a room, everyone, according to protocol, should stand to show them honor. It is like the President of the United States entering a room, and everybody stands in respect. Whether they like the President or not, it is a matter of respect to his title.
But there is a list that transcends all the human lists of the Congressional Medal of Honor winners, the Nobel Prize winners, the Pulitzer Prize winners and any other human award. It is the most prestigious list of all the centuries. Nothing can compare with it.
The list I am referring to is the Book of Life.
The Book of Life is mentioned eight times in the Bible
, seven of which are in the book of Revelation. It is the exclusive list of those throughout history who are redeemed by the blood of God's own Son, by placing their trust in Him.
Oddly, we cannot get on that list by our own efforts. This listing is a free gift, which we receive by grace through faith, a privilege purchased for us by our Lord Jesus Christ.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
