The trusty iPod shuffled up a song by Brandon Heath today. The song is called "Wait and See" and the point is simple. God is not done with me (or you) yet. Occasionally the tender prompting of the Holy Spirit will remind me of how far I have come. And God in His mercy does not reveal to me how far I have to go or how long it has taken me to make the humble progress I have registered.
This weekend was a simple reminder of baby step progress. Dave Burchett 1.0 would have been devastated by this past sports weekend. One beloved baseball team is swept out of the playoffs. Another beloved baseball team loses two tough home games and now faces elimination. Adopted college football team loses heartbreaking contest. Pro football team loses (again). And my fantasy football team was beaten by a winless competitor. Add all of those up and DB 1.0 would have been grumpy and then depressed for days. I know that is silly. But it was my reality for many years. I think the Dave Burchett 2.0 spiritual priorities software upgrade happened when I became a father. The 3.0 version was installed when my dad passed away. The big 4.0 upgrade came along with Joni's breast cancer diagnosis and long treatment journey. All of those upgrades put my tough sports weekend in perspective. That became apparent as I realized today that I was disappointed but not sad. The things that are important to me are unchanged today. My family. My faith. My hope in Christ. That was not my reality for many, many years. Circumstances ruled my mood.
I realized today that I am much better at trusting God for today and not dwelling on yesterday or fearing tomorrow. The sports example is a small one. I have seen His patient hand slowly molding this imperfect clay for years. And that is why Brandon Heath's chorus resonated in my heart today.
There is hope for me yet
Because God won't forget
All the plans he's made for me
I have to wait and see
He's not finished with me yet
I believe that with all of my heart. God has a destiny for me and He will not forget. From the beginning of time Jesus had a plan for me. Don't take my word for it. God's Word clearly states that His sovereign hand directs our plans.
For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths. (Proverb 3:5-6)
For this is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death. (Psalm 48:14)
Seek first the kingdom of GOD and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)
I can do all things through Christ Who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:13)
So be encouraged. Wait and see what God will do. He's not finished with either one of us yet.
