{Remember When}
an inspirational entry on God's goodness

Yesterday's workout took me to a place I never thought I would tread again—the track. The moment my foot stepped onto the cushioned black surface, that familiar rubbery smell catapulted me back to my days running track and field ... breaking the mile record in 6th grade ... flirting with boys during track meets in 8th grade ... getting so nervous for that gun to go off, I thought I would pee my pants {no joke}.

We all have things that help us remember past experiences—maybe it's a smell, a song or a particular food. Memories serve as markers of our past. They anchor us to where we came from even if we don't know where we're going.

We also need things to help us remember our spiritual experiences.

When life gets busy and chaotic, we can easily forget the ways God's revealed His love, reality, power and goodness. We need to remind ourselves of God's work in our lives so we stay grounded in Him, even when we don't see Him at work.

In the Old Testament, God's people often built 'altars' to help remember His presence and provision. They marked a place of worship to God to remind them of special moments in His presence.

Today, we may not build actual altars, but there are some things we can do to help us recall the goodness of God:

Keep a Journal. Record experiences where you've felt God's presence, where He answered a specific prayer or touched your heart in a special way.

Listen to Songs. The second the words hit your soul you will be propelled into the presence of God, reminding you of certain moments of intimacy with Him.

Read the Bible. Seeing how God has worked in others' lives throughout history can help you remember how He's worked in yours.

God's given us the gift of our senses—hear, smell, taste, see, feel—as tools for us to remain anchored to our past. When we look back and remember moments of God's love, faithfulness and goodness in our lives, how quickly our love, passion and desire for Him returns!

What will you remember today?

Something Else ...
Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion... ~Psalm 103:2-5
