A Slap in the Face
So when David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal according to all these words in the name of David, and waited. Then Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, “Who is David, and who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants nowadays who break away each one from his master. Shall I then take my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men when I do not know where they are from?”
1 Samuel 25:9-11
Look at the attitude Nabal took with David’s men! He answered them foolishly. Nabal questioned them as if he did not know David. Everyone knew who David was, but Nabal refused to acknowledge David or show grace to him, when David had showed grace to Nabal. Nabal already seemed to have made up his own mind about the situation between Saul and David. He played dumb, as if to say, “How do I know David is not just in rebellion against Saul?”
Nabal treated them unfairly in his refusal to give them anything. He did not want to help––selfish. Despite all the good they had done for Nabal, he basically slapped them in the face! Perhaps Nabal’s riches had filled him with pride. He may have felt he was above David in wealth and position. He was the one in charge. His words were insulting. How foolish it was to slight the next King of Israel! David was going to be King!
I could not help but think of Jesus. In humility, He came to earth to die for the sins of men. He showed us such grace, but in return, there were those who in pride rejected Him. They literally slapped Him in the face (John 18:22).
Do you recognize Jesus Christ, the Son of God––Savior of the world? He is the King of kings! Do not be so foolish to reject the only One who, by the grace of God, can save your soul from eternal damnation.
The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
