A Season of Preparation
Hebrews 12:7, 9 (NIV®)
Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father . . . We have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it.
My father believed in discipline. When I was in the midst of some disciplinary process, I never remember telling him, “This feels so just and appropriate. I want you to know how much I respect what you’re doing.” I respected it as I looked back on it later in my life, but I didn’t respect it at the time. Discipline is never fun, whether we are children learning how to behave or adults learning how to relate to God. But we’ll either be disciplined by God or we will forfeit the opportunities that are ahead of us, because we will need to be spiritually mature to thrive in the season to come, both as individuals and as the Church.
THINK ABOUT IT
Are you in a season where God is inviting you to greater maturity through discipline? Remember that He loves you as one of His children. Trust that He is preparing you for your future good.
Heavenly Father, help me to see when You are disciplining me as a child of God. Teach me to be still and know that You are God. I confess that I often lose sight of You and become defensive. Instead, I long to let Your Holy Spirit turn my focus back to You as my Father. I know You care about me and everything comes from Your loving hand. In Jesus’ name, amen.
