Today’s Text and Thought of Encouragement:

“The steps of a good person are directed by the Lord, He delights in their way and He busies Himself with their every step.”

Psalm 37:23
Amplified Bible

“What comfort ‘tis this truth to know
Our daily steps (God) will direct,
Which means He surely will protect…

He will guide us on life’s way;
He’s said He’ll do it – we may rest,
And find He leads in paths most blest.

Our ‘steps’ He speaks of – not our flight
Our daily steps He’ll guide aright;
He has been guiding till this day;
Why should we fear He’ll let us stray?

Years come and go, with loss and change;
The path is oft-times new and strange,
But His strong hand, unerring skill,
And perfect knowledge, order still.

Yes, there we rest! ‘Tis His sure Word,
Our steps are ordered by the Lord;
And this would be our happy sense
That we in Him have confidence.”

J. Danson Smith

“In all your ways recognize and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make plain your path.”

Proverbs 3:6
Amplified Bible

Today’s Study Text:

“For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous.”

Psalm 1:6

“God charts the road you take.”

Psalm 1:6
The Message Bible

“He Knows the Road You Take”

Psalm 1 Part 20

“Life is a journey on many
different roads
but God is always with us.
Sometimes we lift our faces to the sun
and God is with us.
But then there is the hard journey
through pathways of pain
and fears in dark places.
But God is with us.
Nothing can separate us
from the love of God in Christ Jesus.”

Dorothy McRae – McMahon

How does it make me feel to know that God has charted my path for me?

When I find myself in times of perplexity, in what ways do I look to my Father for His guidance?

“God leads His chosen children
Along strange paths.
And it is a strange path,
And a holy path
God Himself walked.”

Mechtilde of Magdeburg

“Greet my congregation for me…Where will God’s way lead us now? But HE Himself stands always at the end of the road.”

Ludwig Steil

The words above were penned by the German pastor, Ludwig Steil who was arrested by the Nazis in World War II and imprisoned at Dachau where he died. I find his question, “Where will God’s way lead us now?” to be a deeply personal reflection. At one time or another in each of our lives we all have most likely faced questions like: “What is God doing?” “Where does He want me to go?” “What does He want me to do?” “What does the future hold?”

Quite possibly these may be questions which you are facing today. Maybe all you see in front of you is a big question mark. Well, then Psalm 1: 6 should be of great comfort to you as a follower of Jesus. As the Message Bible so perfectly paraphrases Psalm 1: 6, “God charts the road you take!

In the Psalmist’s words, those who have chosen to travel the journey of their life with God, have a tremendous benefit because in all they do they are prepared for they carry a map designed especially by their Guide. He who knew us first, plans for us best! Every detail of your journey and mine has been plotted out on a map with our name on it. And the pattern of your way befits your life. This fact was really driven home to me several years ago when in my study for one of the devotionals I was preparing, I came upon this specific quote by Alexander McLaren: “If God sends you on stony paths, He will provide you with strong shoes.” It’s quite possible these words may not mean the same to every person. But to two people whose feet were crushed like Jim and myself, these beautiful words tell me that even when the path God takes us on leads onto a freeway where someone tries with all their power to kill us, God has special shoes prepared that will help us in the future as we navigate the stony paths ahead.

As I’ve shared with you before, I’m a die-hard fan of Elvis Presley’s Gospel recordings. And as I worked on this devotional, I chose to listen again to one of my ultimate favorites “His Hand in Mine.” The words to this gospel number are some of my favorites:

“You may ask me how I know my Lord is real,
You may doubt the things I say and doubt the way I feel
But I know He’s real today, He’ll always be
I can feel His hand in mine and that’s enough for me.

I will never walk alone He holds my hand
He will guide each step I take
And if I fall I know He’ll understand
Till the day He tells me why He loves me so,
I can feel His hand in mine
That’s all I need to know.”

There’s something wonderful knowing that the “One” who holds my hand during my entire journey is also the “One” who planned every step I’m going to be taking throughout my entire life. In the words of author Horatius Bonar, “Thy way, not mine O Lord, However dark it be! Lead me by Thine own hand. Choose out the path for me.” God know the way of righteous. He knows every step you take. Praise God – He’s the perfect “Map Maker” and He’s promised to hold your hand until the day you get home!

“Lord, not that way:
This way is easier.
Merciful Lord, forgive us.
Lord, not that way:
This way is more interesting.
Merciful Lord, forgive us
Lord, not that way:
This is your way.
Merciful Lord, forgive us
‘My ways are not your ways’,
says the Lord.”

Sheila Maxey

“Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths.”

Psalm 25:4
Amplified Bible

“I have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the full, deep and clear knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom, in comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God and in understanding and discernment of spiritual things. That you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord.”

Colossians 1:9,10
Amplified Bible

All the Way My Savior Leads Me

“All the way my Savior leads me;
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy,
Who through life has been my guide?
Heavenly peace, divinest comfort,
Here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know, whatever befalls me,
Jesus doeth all things well.

All the way my Savior leads me,
Cheers each winding path I tread,
Gives me grace for every trial,
Feeds me with the living bread.
Though my weary steps may falter,
And my soul at thirst may be,
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! A spring of joy I see.

All the way my Savior leads me
O, the fullness of His love!
Perfect rest to me is promised
In my Father’s house above;
When I wake to life immortal,
Wing my flight to realms of day,
This my song through endless ages,
Jesus led me all the way.”

Fanny Crosby
Poet and Hymn Writer

“Though this hymn expressed Fanny Crosby’s lifelong testimony, it was prompted by a specific incident in 1874. One day she didn’t have enough money to pay her rent. Just as she committed the matter to God in prayer, a stranger appeared at her door and pressed a ten-dollar bill in her hand before disappearing. It was the very amount needed. That night, she wrote the words to, “All the Way My Savior Leads Me.” Even her blindness, she realized, was part of God’s plan…Years later, Fanny viewed her blindness as a special gift from God, believing He had given her a particular ‘soul-vision’ which equipped her for a special work.”
