2 Reasons Why Healthcare Sharing Is Popular among Christians

Life can sometimes be overwhelming. At times, it can seem like everything is going wrong and there’s nobody to lend a helping hand. It’s times like that where it’s as important as ever for us to come together to help our fellow Christians. When our fellow Christians are facing their darkest days is when we need to “Bear one another’s burdens” as the book of Galatians states.

As Christians, who have been instructed to help their brothers and sisters in times like this, it is crucial that we heed this call. But, how can we know when one of our brothers and sisters is in need? And even if we did know, how could we get the financial assistance to those in need when they need it? That’s where non-profit organizations known as healthcare sharing ministries can play a key role in the healthcare market for Christians.

Healthcare sharing ministries were founded on the idea of people coming together to help each other share the burden of medical expenses. The purpose of the healthcare sharing ministries is to facilitate the sharing of funds to members in need from their fellow members in order to pay their medical expenses. Healthcare sharing ministries simply disburse the monthly payments from members to their fellow members who have incurred medical expenses, so those members can use that money to pay for their medical expenses. Simply put, it’s people helping people.

Take for example, the case of Steve Semer, who became a Liberty HealthShare member in January 2017. When he went for his first wellness exam as a Liberty HealthShare member, the doctor noticed that Steve’s voice seemed weak, so he referred him to an ENT surgeon to have a biopsy. After the biopsy, it was confirmed that Steve had cancer of the vocal cords. Despite enduring radiation, the cancer remained and Steve had to have an operation to get the cancer removed. The members of Liberty HealthShare paid for all of Steve’s eligible medical expenses resulting from the cancer and as Steve says, he is “alive and well because of Liberty HealthShare and what they did for me”.

This is just one of many examples that can be pointed to as a way to explain why so members of healthcare sharing ministries are so vocal about referring their friends and family to become members. This willingness to refer friends and family to become healthcare sharing members is one of the key reasons why healthcare sharing ministries have experienced an uptick in membership in recent years.

Healthcare sharing ministries have grown quite rapidly over the past decade as more and more people make the decision that they want to help their fellow Christians bear their burdens. Healthcare sharing ministries come in many different sizes, with smaller ministries having just a couple thousand members while larger ministries such as Liberty HealthShare have over 200,000 members. While there are advantages and disadvantages of being a small ministry and being a larger ministry, generally larger ministries like Liberty HealthShare have more financial sharing power since they have more members from which to share funds.

Equally important to how these healthcare sharing ministries share funds is what they share funds towards. One complaint many Christians have with traditional health insurance programs is that their monthly payment is used to help pay for procedures that may not align with their values. With healthcare sharing, only medically necessary procedures and treatments are eligible to be shared among members. This not only allows members to keep their conscience clear, but it also allows monthly costs to be kept lower. This means that not only are these healthcare sharing ministries making it possible to share each other’s burdens when it comes to medical expenses, they’re also making it affordable.

As Christians, we are expected to help our fellow brothers and sisters when they are in need. One of the heaviest burdens to bear can be financial burdens stemming from medical expenses. Luckily, healthcare sharing ministries are here to help make it easier for us all to help our fellow brothers and sisters when they face a burden resulting from medical expenses. So, if you are looking for a way to help others afford their medical expenses while also saving yourself some money, check out a healthcare sharing ministry today!
