A new report has revealed that nearly 46 million people live in slavery worldwide.

RelevantMagazine.com reports that the shocking statistic was revealed by the 2016 Global Slavery Index, released by the Walk Free Foundation.

The report revealed that slavery around the world is 28 percent higher in 2016 than just two years ago. The report also found that India has the highest number of enslaved individuals where more than 18 million people live in slavery.

North Korea also ranked high on the Index. In fact, because so many people are forced into labor camps in North Korea, the country has the highest number of slaves per capita. Four percent of North Korea’s population lives in slavery.

Despite the fact that slavery is illegal throughout the world, human trafficking and forced labor continue to be major issues.

Although the Index revealed sobering statistics, there was also some hope. Many organizations such as the Walk Free Foundation and the International Justice Mission are working to end slavery, and some countries such as India are beginning to take steps to prevent human trafficking and forced labor.
