Nearly 100 ISIS militants were reportedly killed on Christmas Day as the battle for the Iraqi city of Mosul continues. reports that Iraqi forces killed 97 ISIS terrorists in eastern and southern Mosul. The militants were reportedly killed in three separate battles as fighting for control of the city rages.

According to, the battle for Mosul has been ongoing since October 2016. ISIS originally took over control of the city in 2014 and imposed strict conditions on Mosul’s citizens who were told to either convert or flee. Many were also killed.

An estimated 100,000 Mosul citizens have been displaced in the conflict, and humanitarian groups say as many as one million may be displaced before the conflict ends.

Although ISIS forces are losing strength, it is still an uphill battle for the 90,000 Kurdish Peshmerga, tribal militia, and Iraqi coalition forces that comprise those fighting against ISIS.

Much of the fighting has turned into a kind of urban warfare, which is not easily won. Although airstrikes are helping Iraqi forces, and although ISIS forces are outnumbered, the battle is likely to stretch on for some time.

While the fighting continues, many of Mosul’s citizens remain caught between staying in their homes and fleeing to refugee camps, which often lack basic necessities.
