As violence has escalated in Iraq, President Barack Obama contends the situation demands increased efforts from the U.S. as well support from other nations.

According to CNN, "It's going to need more help from us, and it's going to need more help from the international community," Obama said Thursday. "...I don't rule out anything because we do have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothoold in either Iraq or Syria."

In recent days jihadist, representing the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, known as ISIS, has consumed Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq.

Along with 500,000 refugees, U.S. trained Iraqi troops fled the region. Meanwhile in Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit, militants have taken control of oil friends.

Mission Network News reports SAT-7, who broadcasts Christian television programming directly into millions of homes throughout the Middle East and North Africa, viewers in Iraq are among those at risk as a result of the advance of militant groups in the north of the country.

Middle East analyst Ziya Meral maintains that Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki is recruiting Shiite militants to fight as the Iraqi army seems unfit to defend the country.

“Tens of thousands of Iraqi troops simply left towns [in the face of] ISIS attacks without a fight,” told SAT-7. “However, a strategy depending on Shiite militants would further destabilise Iraq and add to Sunni concerns. The incident shows that the civil war in Syria is deeply affecting all other countries in the region.”
