Alfie Evans Has Died: 'We are Heartbroken,' Say Parents

Alfie Evans, the 23-month-old little boy who has a rare neurodegenerative disorder and whose parents were fighting to save his life, has passed away at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, UK, where he was being kept. has reported that Alfie passed away around 2:30 a.m. local time.

“Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am,” wrote Alfie’s mother, Kate James.“We are heart broken. Thank you everyone for all your support.”

“My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30... absolutely heartbroken... I LOVE YOU MY GUY,” added father Tom Evans.

Alder Hey also issued a statement following Alfie’s death:

“We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alfie’s family at this extremely distressing time. All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them. This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected.”

Alfie’s parents had been engaged in a legal battle against the hospital and the UK courts who claimed that Alfie’s condition could never improve and it was “inhumane” to keep him alive on life support.

Despite support from the international community and even an offer from the Pope and doctors at a hospital in Rome, the UK courts upheld the ruling against Alfie and his parents.

Please join us in lifting this grieving family up in prayer.
