'They Are Not Alone': First Lady Jill Biden Makes Impromptu Visit to Ukraine on Mother's Day

On Sunday, which was Mother's Day, First Lady Jill Biden made an unannounced visit to Ukraine to express her support for the Ukrainian people amid the war with Russia.

According to Reuters, Biden visited a school temporarily serving as a shelter and met with Ukraine's first lady, Olena Zelenska. So far, the school-turned-shelter is housing about 163 displaced Ukrainians, including 47 children.

"This Mother's Day, I wanted to be with Ukrainian mothers and their children," Biden tweeted. "Over the last few months, far too many Ukrainians have had to flee their homes – forcing them to leave behind their loved ones."

"As a mother, I can only imagine the grief and anxiety they must feel every day from Russia's unprovoked attack," she continued. "I've seen firsthand how the people of Slovakia and Romania have opened their homes, their schools, their hospitals, and their hearts."

"Together, we are united for Ukraine. I hope by being here, I can convey how much their strength and resilience inspires the world, and remind them that they are not alone," she concluded.

According to a U.S. official, Biden had been visiting neighboring Slovakia before making the unannounced visit to Ukraine.

During the meeting, Biden gave Zelenska a bouquet of flowers, and the two shared a hug. Zelenska, who made her first public appearance since the Russian invasion began on Feb. 24, praised Biden's visit to Ukraine despite the ongoing military conflict.

"We understand what it takes for the U.S. first lady to come here during a war when the military actions are taking place every day, where the air sirens are happening every day even today," Ukraine's first lady said through an interpreter.

"We all feel your support, and we all feel the leadership of the U.S. president, but we would like to note that Mother's Day is a very symbolic day for us because we also feel your love and support during such an important day."
