Safe to Try at Home
by Berni Dymet
Matthew 17:20 He said to them, ‘Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, "Move from here to there", and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.'
I used to hear people talking about having the sort of faith that moves mountains. And I thought yeah, sure, one day when I'm a super spiritual super Christian like that guy over there.
A bit like those magicians who play with fire and then they warn you - Don't try this at home." And yet Jesus took a bunch of uneducated fisherman, tax collectors, nobodies like you and me called them Disciples and expected them to have faith.
Five thousand hungry people and the disciples said "Jesus, you've got to send them away, there's no food." And He said - "Well no, you feed them."
He expected them to exercise their faith. To use it. To live it. To make a difference in this world for Him, with a faith the size of a mustard seed. That'd be enough - a small faith in a mighty God.
And you know what His attitude to faith teaches me? Sure, a small bit of faith is a mighty thing. But it is safe to try at home.
In fact, we're meant to.
