The Sweet Sound of the Second Word [Part 1]

Are you ready for some good news?

The truth is that, in Christ, no storm can stop you.

Today’s text: “Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying, “I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.” (Jonah 2:1–2, ESV)

Jonah was a prophet who fled from the Lord. He found himself headed by ship to Tarshish, as far from God’s plan as he could go. Ashamed, Jonah disengaged from life and became depressed. He went below deck to sleep during the storm.

Jonah believed a lie of shame: "If I sleep, the storm will go away."

It’s a common deception: "If there is some way I can avoid this moment, cover up the pain, then I'll be ok. I just won't deal with it today. I'll mask it." The great temptation when we begin to feel the hopelessness of shame is to avoid the problem rather than facing it.

Don't let your storm speak to you. Speak to your storm. Trust God's power. You have the Word of God in you.

Desperate, Jonah asked to be thrown overboard, and he was swallowed by a great fish. From inside the fish, Jonah prayed a "sinking down" prayer. "I called to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice" (Jonah 2:2).

When you get into a really deep situation, let the pain make you call out to God, as deep calls unto deep. It may not be eloquent, but it will reach the heart of God.

And that’s the Gospel!
