Bubbling with Thanks

Psalm 107:1-3

With all the storms the National News has been filled with rescue stories. They show a half-submerged car and I shudder thinking of the driver and maybe a passenger inside. The water is rushing into the windows, and then the program breaks for an ad. I have to wait more than a minute and a half to find out how the story came out. Then the smiling news anchor shows a fire rescue team hauling the occupants out of the death trap to safety and the story resolves with the rescued bubbling with thanks and praise to the rescuers.

It was worse than any natural disaster. The Babylonian Captivity swept an entire nation away, but then the Lord remembered His people and rescued them. He brought hundreds back home from all over the diaspora. The psalmist begins Psalm 107 bubbling with thanks to the Lord.

Give thanks to the LORD for He is good, for his covenant loyal love lasts forever. Let those redeemed by the LORD, those redeemed from the hand of the oppressor, speak out this thanks, those gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.” - Psalm 107:1-3

In this psalm the writer begins with the shouts of thanks when the captives were set free and returned home. He goes on to generalize, reminding us of all kinds of dangers God rescues humans from. He wants me to join him in his thanksgiving, and I’ve got a strong reason to do so. Jesus set me free from an enemy far stronger than the King of Babylon. As I begin this week I shout out my thanks to God for delivering me from slavery to sin and death through Jesus’ death and resurrection. His loyal love does endure forever.

Lord, thanks for redeeming me from Satan’s kingdom by the sacrifice of your Son. I also thank you for demonstrations this week of your power to rescue your children from stress that looks like it will drown them. Thanks for rescuing my friend who believed his career had ended and who couldn’t sleep wondering how his family would make it financially. Thanks for giving him an incredible new assignment and indicating that your good plan for His life is hardly over. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

In our Devo tomorrow, we begin walking with Matthew through our Savior’s journey to the cross.
