The Ominous Vultures
I’ve shared with you about the two hippos who fought in the Mara river and how the carcass of the loser was hauled up into an open, grassy area near the camp where we stayed during our brief safari. It took the massive jaws of two big male lions all night to begin to tear the thick skin of the hippo away so they could get at the meat, but the vultures took only minutes to swoop in to devour the hippo’s eyes. Then they waited along with the hyenas and the jackals for the lions to get full. The lions were scary, but just the shadow of those big vultures swooping over our van sent shivers down my spine.
Jesus warned those joining with the Antichrist during the Tribulation period that the vultures will gather to devour their corpses when He returns to bring justice against those who murdered His followers.
“‘I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed: one will be taken and the other left. There will be two women grinding together: one will be taken and the other left.’
The disciples asked him, ‘Where Lord?’ And He said to them, ‘Where the body is, that’s where the vultures gather.’” Luke 17:34-37
Whether it’s the vultures gathering to pick up the remains of a hippo, or the shadow of the big bird flying over my house to pick up the remains of a squirrel dead in the road in front our house, vultures declare that something has died. In Jesus’ first coming He came to suffer and die so that we can be forgiven. But as the Bible moves towards its final climax, John the Apostle says that the vultures will gather to devour the corpses of the rulers and the mighty who chose to follow Antichrist and his false prophet and war against Jesus (Revelation 13:17-21).
LORD, when I see those who love You beheaded or blown to bits because they won’t deny You, I ask why, if Jesus is the all powerful one, doesn’t He do something? Thanks for the reminder right in this passage that first You needed to suffer, but that there will come a time when You will execute pure justice, and those ominous vultures will gather.
