Bragging about the Winner

Psalms 106:1, 9,10

Whether it’s the Olympics, the NBA Finals, the World Series, or the Super Bowl, victory generates praise, and praise attracts.

In Psalm 106 the Psalmist is not excited about a quarterback who can sling a football, or a pitcher who pitches a no-hitter and wins the series. He is excited about a God who can blast the Red Sea with a mighty wind, open a path for His people, and then drown their enemies in the depths. He shouts,

Hallelujah! Give thanks to Yahweh, for He is good; His faithful, covenant love endures forever. Who can proclaim His mighty valor? Who can cause others to hear all the praise His miraculous acts deserve? ....He rebuked the Red Sea and it dried up; He enabled His people to walk in the depths as if on dry land. He saved them from the hand of those who hated them and redeemed them from the hand of their enemies.” Psalm 106:1, 9-10

I want to be excited about the powerful things Jesus has done for me. Jesus delivered me from Satan, my greatest enemy. He promises to walk with me through the valley of death and join me in celebrating on the other side. Imagine those I might attract to Jesus if I got more excited about him and the concrete things he does than baseball or football fans are about their team! Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

(The psalmist goes on in Psalm 106 to confess his sin and the sin of his people. In doing so he recounts Israel’s history from the deliverance from Egypt to the Exile. He cites at least seven key events in Israel’s history where they forgot God’s deliverance and turned away. See if you can find the events he refers to in your Old Testament.)
