Sky Fall

Mark 13:24-27

Hollywood has told us approximately 300 times that the end of the world is near, and they’ve made a lot of money doing it. From Dr. Strangelove warning us that it’s not smart to play Russian roulette with nuclear bombs to Kevin Costner developing gills in Waterworld to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “I’ll be back” in the Terminator franchise, millions love to go to the movies to get scared to death only to be saved by their super hero in the end.

Only a couple of days before Jesus faced the ultimate bad guys and died, he pointed his followers beyond the cross, the resurrection and even the ascension. He declared that he was the Son of Man Daniel predicted would come and end the reign of all those who defy God and persecute his people.

Jesus states that when those living in Judea see a great Gentile leader rising up defiantly to rule the world, who suddenly ends the sacrifices in the temple and declares he is to be worshipped, it’s time for the true deliver to step back into the pages of history. This final antichrist will be destroyed and God will give his Son “authority, glory, and sovereign power.” And this divine empire will never be destroyed (Daniel 7:11-14).

“But in those days after the time of distress, ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

Then you will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.”   Mark 13:24-27

Now this is one gathering you can’t afford to miss and there is no reason not to become one of God’s chosen family members. John began his Gospel telling the Good News saying, “Yet to all who receive him, to those who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12-13).  Receive Jesus. Receive the new life God wants to give you through his Son. He’s the true super hero who is not a figment of the human imagination but the real thing.

LORD, protect me from falling into the arrogance of thinking that we humans can get organized and use our minds and our creativity to ward off the end of the world. Thanks that when the sky actually does fall, you will be at the controls for the dramatic entrance for your Son to return to this planet.
