The True Masada

Psalm 71:3

As a kid growing up in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York, one thing I was familiar with was rocks. In fact one of the distinctives of the forest was these massive granite boulders rolled into place during the last glacier age. Get behind one of those big stones and you were safe.

In Psalm 71:3 the Psalmist claims that the great I AM is his place of safety and protection, "Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for You are my Rock and my Fortress."

An interesting detail is that the Hebrew term for "fortress" used here is "mesudah." You might have heard of Masada. It's the fortress high in the rocks by the Dead Sea that Herod the Great built as a refuge. This was the last stronghold the Jews held in the Jewish Wars of AD 67-73. Silva, the Roman general, breached the walls and according to Josephus discovered 960 Jews who had committed suicide. Thank God He is a far greater Masada for those who will trust in the Messiah He has sent, Yeshua, Ben David.
