While We Were Sleeping

Mark 4:26-29
A few days ago I told you about planting the seeds in my garden in good soil. Now it’s time to wait. The seeds need time to germinate under the ground, draw nourishment from the surrounding soil, and then those tiny plants will push for the surface. When they break into the light, their growth will accelerate. If it’s a wheat plant, the stem will reach for the sky, head out, and generate hundreds of new seeds. There’s even enough of the grain to take some, grind it, stick it in the oven, and then smell that incredible aroma of fresh bread. And all this productivity happens while I am sleeping. Jesus said the Kingdom of God is like this.

“And Jesus said, ‘The Kingdom of God is like this. A man scatters the seed upon the ground. He sleeps and gets up. Night and day. Night and day. And the seed sprouts and grows. He doesn’t understand how. By itself the earth bears fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full head of grain. When the grain is ripe, he sends out the sickle because the harvest has come.’”  Mark 4:26-29

Our responsibility is to plant the seed of Jesus’ Word, his story, in lives with our tongue and by our actions. But we need to learn to not force it. We have to wait and let the Lord do his invisible work. He’s the one who germinates his word and produces new life and it will happen while we are sleeping.

Lord help me to trust that you will germinate the seed of your Word and cause it to grow. Help me to be patient and open with people, not forcing my personality of theirs, but trusting in the power of the seed and your ability to give life.
