Fortune-Tellers

Acts 16:16-18

Fortune-tellers. In this scientific, technological age no one seriously believes in them anymore, do they? I flew in from S. Korea on Saturday and during the ten days I was there teaching, they elected a new president. Park Geun-hye, their former president, is not only out of office but also in jail. Why? Because for years she consulted Choi Soon-sil, a medium who claimed to be in touch with her assassinated father, a former Korean president.

Based upon these so-called messages from beyond the grave, governmental positions were filled and millions allocated. Even Samsung is caught up in the scandal. When the facts became known, Ms. Park was impeached and convicted of coercion, abuse of authority, and fraud. The irony is that many Korean believe in “Saju,” Korea’s popular fortune-telling method. And before we Americans boast of our mature, scientific objectivity, remember Nancy Reagan consulting with Joan Quigley, her astrologer?

Fortune-telling has a long history and in the first century the Apostle Paul met a young woman in Philippi who made big bucks for her handlers telling the future. The scary thing is that, like the demons Jesus confronted, the voices speaking through this young woman spoke some truth.

“As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a certain slave girl with a spirit of divination who brought a lot of profit to her handlers by her prophecies. She followed Paul and us, crying, ‘These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation.’ She did this for many days until Paul became greatly disturbed and turning he said to the spirit, ‘I command you in the Name of Jesus Christ, come out of her!’  And that very hour it came out.” Acts 16:16-19

She might not have been able to predict the future with accuracy, but the demonic spirit in her definitely knew who Jesus was. But observe that she speaks about “a way of salvation,“ not “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” And this was not the kind of endorsement either Jesus or the Apostle Paul needed.  Jesus’ power set the abused girl free and destroyed the financial base of her handlers.

LORD, thanks that You are the One who’s writing the future. And according to Revelation, it ends with a river of life flowing right through the center of Your Eternal City. Help me to trust Your Word so that I’m not vulnerable to the con of consulting any kind of mediums or astrologers.
